OLYMPIC RENDEZVOUS @ SAMSUNG
Located in Sydney Olympic Park near the
main stadium, Stadium Australia, Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung (OR@S) was a fun
interactive high-tech meeting centre for athletes, the general public and the
media from September 15 to October 1, 2000. A secure center covering an area of
4,000m2, the OR@S was purpose built for hospitality, entertainment, information,
communication and events.

Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung consisted of
an Athletes Centre, Spectator Centre, Olympic Rendezvous Plaza and Digital
Interlude. The unusual design and lighting of OR@S ensured that it was highly
visible within and outside of the Olympic Park. If you didn't know better, you
could think an alien space craft had landed!
The lighting of OR@S was designed by Tony
Davies and installed by Chameleon Touring Systems. Martin Rudder of Chameleon
looked after the site for the seventeen day operation.
"Samsung wanted their site to be lit
with major color washes," explained Tony Davies. "The fixture also had
to be very bright because of the ambient light levels in the area. It also had
to have a wide beam angle because of the size of the area that had to be lit and
the distance we could get away from it."

Consequently Chameleon installed 24
CityColors to wash the building, mainly the forecourt performance area and two
sides of the car park. Later it was decided to light another side of the car
park with 1200W cyc lights with gel on them.
Six Martin PAL's were also used to project
glass gobos. Control was via a MA Scan commander.
"This project was very different to
what we normally do because it was like working on a building site," said
Tony. "It all came together fairly late and had to happen fairly quickly.
There were no major problems but there was more involved than just doing a
normal job. That was partly because of the Olympic restrictions such as getting
accreditation for staff. There were long hours but it came together
smoothly."
Tony reports that during the period there
were virtually no problems at all with the installation
