SYDNEY SKYLINE SPECTACULAR
CityColors Light Up the Olympic Nights
For the Olympic Coordination Authority,
Accolade Communications produced a striking attraction for the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games- the illumination of the Sydney Skyline.
The scale of the project required big bold looks, huge sweeps of the night sky
that led to moments of drama. Eighteen of the city's most prominent buildings
were brilliantly lit, creating a labyrinth of light at street level, whilst
overhead 45 search lights danced and swayed bringing a new dimension to the
skyline. At the center of the display were six YAG lasers mounted atop
Centrepoint Tower. Beaming light across the entire metropolis, they beckoned
people to come and celebrate in the Olympic City.
Our equipment played a major role in the lighting of the city buildings.
Lighting supplier and installation company was Chameleon Touring Systems.
"We like the CityColors because of their CMYK color changing capacity and
their high output MHD 1800W lamp," said Mike Tanner of Chameleon. "The
fact that they are rugged, robust and weatherproof makes them ideal for this
type of project."
One of the most prominent buildings lit during this period was the Four Points
Hotel which was on display to the thousands of visitors to Sydney's Darling
Harbour. Eight CityColors were used on the hotel. Further up the Darling Harbour
foreshore, the Telstra building was lit by three 2.5K CityColors.
"The lighting fixtures for these buildings had to be compact and they were
very exposed to the elements," explained Mike. "So the CityColors were
the best choice especially with their high output and their ability to be set in
a specific color for a long period or to be able to change."
The Reserve Bank in Martin Place was lit by twelve CityColors whilst the Westpac
Bank had two CityColors. Number 9 Castlereagh Street had one CityColor in its
ground floor garden and four CityColors in the garden on level 19. At Circular
Quay, four CityBeams lit the Gateway building.
